Lifegiving Parent Podcast Series: Ruth Chou Simons

What a gift today to have Ruth Chou Simons on my podcast!  Ruth is one of those rare individuals who has a deep wellspring of love for God and theology as well as the gift of bringing that love to reflect in her artwork. I love her heart for her family, and it was such a joy to record with her.

Ruth is an artist, author, entrepreneur, and speaker. Ruth is most interested in how the gospel intersects her daily life, and longs to see beauty and truth together in any creative medium. She’s "self says" she is an unlikely mom to six  boys and wife to Troy, with whom she leads GraceLaced's small but mighty team. When not painting, writing, and casting vision for GraceLaced.com, Ruth is usually busy eating chips and salsa, sorting laundry, cooking for large crowds, not finishing her sentences, and discovering off-beaten paths in the wild with her guys. She is a devotee of pho, a recovering perfectionist, a converted four-wheeling enthusiast, and a believer in waiting upon her Redeemer through every season.

Ruth, Troy and their boys call both Los Ranchos, New Mexico, and the Western slope of Colorado, near Durango, home and spend their time chasing sunsets as much as possible. I am happy to now be able to call her a fellow-Colorado-an! :)

Ruth is so kindly offering a copy of her beautiful new book, Garden of Truth, to one of our readers! Leave a comment here or on my instagram today and tag a friend. Each of you will win a book--one wins Ruth's book, one wins a book of your choice from me. Watch my Instagram for details on how to enter. And be sure to find Ruth at her blog, Gracelaced, and follow her on Instagram here: Gracelaced

Numbering Your Child's Days & Nurturing Their Spirit & Clay & Sally LGP Podcast Series 1

danielle-macinnes-88493-unsplash.jpg

What a whirlwind week. Thanks so all of our friends for helping make this book launch reach to people all over the world. Couldn't have done it without so many people sharing. And I want all of you to know that I have 3 precious friends, Gretchen, Jennie and Misty who did all the work and made everything work. I will tell you more about them another time, but they did it all.

I am still suffering with the results of my bizarre accident. Off to the London hospital this Wednesday to see if the infection inside my eye is gone, and I would so appreciate prayer for this.

I am so excited about the next 4 Mondays because you, your friends, and your husbands can hear Clay and me talk about our 34 years of parenting and what really mattered along the way. What we are sharing are the foundations that pointed all of our children to their own strong and personal relationship with the Lord. This is the first post of four podcasts by us (Clay and Sally!) reflecting on the eight heartbeats of parental lifegiving that are the core of our new book, The Lifegiving Parent.

Clay: When Sally showed me the banner image for today's post and podcast, I thought it was especially appropriate. If you've been to our ministry website at WholeHeart.org, you'll recognize it as the primary image I chose for the banner there, as well. I think it captures visually both the heart of lifegiving parenting, and the idea behind our first two heartbeats in today's podcast: numbering your child's days, and nurturing your child's spirit.

Lifegiving parenting is not just about telling your child what to do and saying, "Go do as I say." It is much more about providing footsteps in the sand of the beach of life that they can see and walk in. It is about inviting them to follow you on your own journey with God. That idea is the life-blood flowing through each heartbeat of parental lifegiving--your children following the life of God that they see in you.

A chorus I repeat several times in the book is that it is not enough to give your child just a Christian life; you must give them the life of Christ. "Engagement with Christian culture does not define a Christian home; engagement with the living Christ does. That understanding is a necessary first step on the path to becoming a lifegiving parent."

The first heartbeat in the book is "Numbering Your Child's Days." Looking at the image of the father and son on the beach, it is realizing that there is only a limited stretch of that beach of life on which you can give your child footsteps in which to follow before they will begin making their own path on the beach, and continue it after your footsteps are gone.

"Our children's spirits are hardwired by God to look to us first for the spiritual influence they long for because of God's image within them. ... Our children's childhoods are here and gone before we know it, and while our influence continues in young adulthood in a different way, we don't have a second chance to make a first impression on our children's hearts while that window is most divinely open to our influence."

The second heartbeat in the book is "Nurturing Your Child's Spirit." Thinking again about the boy and his dad on the beach, nurturing is about lifegiving relationship. Paul tells the Ephesian fathers in 6:4b (literally), "Feed your children out of the training and instruction of the Lord." Nurturing your children is as intimate as feeding your child spiritually out of the life of God that is already in you.

"Even though Paul addressed fathers in his Ephesians comments, looking at his comments in Thessalonians [2:7-12] suggests that he knows that the spiritual nurture of children is a biparental responsibility--both Mom and Dad are needed in the process. You are your spouse are lifegiving parents together, bringing your children into engagement with the life of God in your home by nurturing their spirits. You both are feeding them from the life of God that is in your own spirits, and this is the life that will lead to their own relationships with God as they grow strong and healthy in Him."

We love hearing from you. Let us know what you think about our ideas. We pray for all who are on this journey of parenting who listen to this and pray you may feel encouraged. Thanks for sharing with your friends as they might just need some encouragement, too.

Lifegiving Parent Podcast Series: Erin Loechner

Erin Loechner pic.jpg

Erin Loechner has become a sweet friend to me. We got to know each other because she reached out to me. I am used to reaching out to others, so her gracious encouragement to me when I wasn't even looking for it meant so much.

Erin is one of those women who touches everything in her wake with beauty and creativity. Besides being an author, of the book, Chasing Slow. She and her husband hosted a creative show in Los Angeles on HGTV for a couple of years  and walked away from it to move home to the Midwest. Now she cares for her family and does all sorts of creative endeavors. I love to look at her photos and images just to be inspired and it has been fun to watch the reruns of her show.

Find her captivating story on her beautiful blog: Design For Mankind  and enjoy her inspiring articles.

Follow her on Instagram @erinloechner

Erin has blessed my launch so much by creating beautiful downloadable pdf's and posters to share. My publisher liked them so much they chose to share them with their network.

Today she is sharing one she made especially for my launch team and the friends in my audience, to thank you for participating in launch week with us. Print this out in color and frame it and remember to do it every day--speaking words into your children's hearts that will change them forever.

Storyformed Podcast Episode #27 - Why Do Goodness, Truth, and Beauty Matter? (A Conversation with Adam Pelser

girl in field of poppies.jpg

Do you ever hear people rattle off the words, 'goodness, truth, and beauty', and wonder what they are talking about? We mention this triad of words from time to time on the Storyformed podcast, but don't often take the time to discuss what we really mean when we say them. So, today I had the opportunity to interview philosophy professor Adam Pelser about this topic!

Adam received his Ph.d from Baylor University where he studied under Bob Roberts, a renown Christian philosopher. Adam is a currently a philosophy professor at the Air Force Academy where he teaches Ethics, Philosophy of Religion, Philosophy of Love, and even a course on C.S. Lewis and Philosophy. He writes on emotions and virtue formation and he is currently writing a book on Emotional Evidence for God where he explains how we can see God with the "eyes of our heart." You can connect with Adam on Facebook and Twitter (@AdamCPelser) and at his website - adampelser.com.

Topics Include:

  • The value of understanding goodness, truth, and beauty as Christian virtues
  • How goodness, truth, and beauty show up in everyday life
  • How goodness, truth and beauty reveal themselves in stories
  • Book recommendations

Lifegiving Parent Podcast Series: Sam Smith

sd-smith-sally-clarkson.jpeg

Don't you just love how God brings you friends that you really needed but didn't even know to ask? S.D. Smith, "Sam" as we know him, has become a cherished family friend. We really love his whole family and wish we could adopt them. His encouragement, support, love and creativity has been a constant source of encouragement in the past few years.

As many know, cultivating our children's imaginations and reading hundreds of great stories to them became a foundation for them to learn to think of themselves as heroes, ready to live a courageous story for God's kingdom.

Some years ago, Sam told us he was working on a book that was based on a story he told his children when they were little. It sounded like the stories we read to our children. We were intrigued and couldn't wait to see it print. This first book, The Green Ember, was the first book that has been a best seller since the beginning. Thousands of families and children have been hooked on these books and the wonderful characters of Rabbits who are the heroes of the tales. Two more books in the series have followed, Ember Falls and Ember Risingas well as two short novels. For more info, visit the Story Warren shop and see all the books and descriptions.

Along the way, Sam asked Joel, our son, to become the narrator for each of the main volumes of his wonderful tales (find out more about each audiobook on the Story Warren store). Joel loved the challenge and interpreted the many voices and personalities of the characters in the books. And now, by God's grace, people all over the world write to Joel about how much they love listening to these audiobooks. In addition to his narration, Joel wrote an album of original musical soundscapes to listen to while reading the books, called Melodies for the Mended Wood, which you can find out more about here. Take a listen to the first five songs on the album below:

Sam has agreed to give away a set of signed copies of the whole set of his books. And so we decided to give away a set of our Lifegiving books to match his generous offer. He has also agreed to give away a set of audiobooks to a winner and five copies of Joel's Melodies for the Mended Wood album.

If you would like to win this wonderful giveaway, follow Sam (sdsmithereens) and me (sally.clarkson)  on instagram and then tag a friend to tell them about the launch of our new book, The Lifegiving Parent. We will pick a one winner from the comments for this great gift of his books and your friend that you tagged will win a set of my books. And 5 more winners will be chosen to win the audio books. What fun!

Lifegiving Parent Podcast Series: Kristen Kill

kristenandsally.JPG

Numbering your child’s days may not sound on the surface like a biblical priority of parenting, but think about parenting as though you were Commander Jim Lovell on the ill-fated flight of Apollo 13. On the return leg of their aborted moon mission, as the astronauts fought to control their crippled flight module, Commander Lovell had to make a manual course correction, relying only on a wristwatch and his own handwritten math, engineering skills, and jet-pilot instincts to steer the craft safely back home.

Fortunately, like the commander, you have the opportunity as a parent to steer the craft of your family safely home. Small choices like a family planning time may seem unimportant to you now, but they could be helping to set the trajectory of your children’s lives, sending them on a path to find life in God in your home. My desire is to help you become a lifegiving parent who confidently steers the modules of your children’s hearts into the life of God. The simple course correction of beginning to number your children’s days—of beginning to parent them with the end in mind—could be the one that points you, and them, safely home on this journey of life with God.

I was so thrilled to have this time podcasting with my delightful, dear friend, Kristen. We've known one another for years, and she is a kindred spirit. I hope you will enjoy listening in on our conversation.

Kristen Kill is a woman transformed by the delight of God. She is passionate about encouraging women who feel stretched thin with the truth that, even in the tension, God is singing over them with love. After spending the last seven years in the hustle of New York City, Kristen and her husband, Josh, are learning to go slow as they raise their five kids in the Pacific Northwest. Her days are filled with homeschooling, walking her slightly anxious hound dog, and putting off the cleaning for one more day.
